Cold-weather dressing goes wrong in the same way for most people: one very thick garment instead of several thin ones, and nothing thought about underneath. The result is a coat that will not close comfortably, sleeves too tight to push up indoors, and a torso that alternates between sweating and shivering. Layering properly is less about buying warm things and more about the order they go in.
Three layers, three jobs
The base layer moves moisture away from the skin, the mid layer holds warm air, and the outer layer blocks wind and rain. If any one of them is doing another’s job, the system fails. A thick cotton base layer, for instance, becomes damp and cold the moment you walk to the bus stop briskly.
The base layer is where fit matters
A base layer only works in contact with the skin, so it needs to fit close without pressing. Sizing up here is the classic error, because a loose base layer traps damp fabric against you and does the opposite of what it promises. Measure and check the actual chart before ordering; Just My Size lists both the 1X to 5X and 16W to 32W grids, and reading the centimetres rather than trusting a remembered size is what avoids a return.
What thermals are made of
Fine merino wool is warm when damp and needs washing less often, but it is expensive and wears through at friction points. Synthetic thermals dry faster and cost far less, though they hold odour and need washing after each wear. Cotton is comfortable indoors and a poor base layer outdoors for the reason above.
Mid layers without volume
A fleece and a light quilted layer trap warm air far more efficiently per centimetre than a heavy knitted jumper, which is why they leave room in the coat. A long-line cardigan does a similar job indoors and can stay on all day in a cold office. Look for mid layers cut long enough in the body to stay tucked under the coat when you sit down.
Sleeves, armholes and the coat problem
Most winter discomfort in plus sizes comes down to armholes rather than chest measurements. Well-graded plus-size garments change the armhole depth, back length and shoulder slope as the size increases; poorly graded ones simply scale the whole pattern up, which produces a high, tight armhole that binds under a coat. If a jumper feels restrictive when you reach forwards, the grading is the reason, not your size.
The layers that earn their space
- A close-fitting long-sleeved base layer in merino or a synthetic knit
- A fleece or light quilted mid layer, cut long in the body
- A wind-resistant outer layer that fastens over both without straining
- Wool-blend socks, which stay warm when slightly damp
- A hat and gloves, which do more for warmth than an extra jumper
Washing thermals properly
Wool wants a cool wash, a wool cycle and no tumble drying, and it should be dried flat rather than hung whilst heavy with water. Synthetics want a warm wash with no fabric conditioner, since conditioner coats the fibres and stops them moving moisture. Both last far longer if you own two and alternate rather than washing the same one twice a week.
Where not to spend
Expensive technical base layers are aimed at people standing still on a mountain for hours, not at a school run or a walk to the station. A modest synthetic thermal top does that job perfectly well, and the money is better spent on an outer layer that genuinely blocks wind. It is also worth resisting the urge to buy a full set of thermals in September; buy one, wear it through a cold week, and then decide whether you want a second.
